Limmud Atlanta & Southeast Records

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 428

Scope and Contents

The researcher interested in modern history of Jewish community events in the Southeast will find this collection of special interest. The records are arranged both by subject and chronologically, each year separated by a different folder from 2008-2018. Each folder holds the program books from that year’s LimmudFest, which includes the lists of presenters and events, as well as the biographies of the presenters. 2009-10, and 2012 folders also have the event programs from the Limmud regional conferences held in the spring- each program also lists the events and presenters’ biographies and promotes the LimmudFest of that year. The marketing flyers are held in the same folder and are arranged chronologically within that folder.

Biographical / Historical

Limmud (Hebrew for “learning”) is a charity organization based in the United Kingdom that promotes teaching and education of Jewish life and heritage, by taking people “one step further on their Jewish journeys.” It originally started as a one-day conference, organized by four Jewish educators, who were inspired by the Miami-based Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE). The organization became international for the first time in 1999 in Australia. Limmud Atlanta & Southeast, created in 2008, is one of 80 international Limmud communities that sponsors the community events. Limmud Atlanta & Southeast’s biggest event is LimmudFest, which has occurred in the North Georgia mountains every Labor Day Weekend since 2009. Other events include the conferences in late March and the single day events of Taste of Limmud, which is promotional for the festival in the fall. Specifically, Limmud ATL+SE focuses on three objectives- learning, diversity, and volunteerism- that work together to expand Jewish horizons and create connections of the local Jewish community. In the most recent LimmudFest 2019, there were a variety of presentations including Shabbat 101, Hebrew Calligraphy, food demonstrations, meditation hikes, and a session on The Earthly Jerusalem and the Heavenly Jerusalem.
