Biographical / Historical
Robert M. Travis (1900-1985) served as president of a revitalized Zionist District of Atlanta from 1937 to 1939. Under the prodding and by galvanizing the resources of like-minded Zionist leaders in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi, the Southeastern Zionist Region was formed in 1938 with Jake Felt as its first as its first president. On the subject of Zionism he was a well-rounded scholar, having studied and absorbed the teachings of the greatest writers and activists of the movement as well as the lessons of Jewish history. He often contributed to editorials in the local newspapers and wrote extensively on the topic of Zionism. The donor of this collection, Janna Felt Zwerner, was Mr. Travis’s granddaughter.
