Biographical / Historical

Sara Cohen Alterman is a native Atlantan, born in 1917. She began Zionist and Jewish education oriented early, attending the Ahavath Achim Hebrew School and Bible class, graduated from the Shearith Israel Sunday School, and attended the Arbiter Farband Yiddish Shule. At the age of 16 she lead the Young Judean Club, and at 18 joined Junior Hadassah. During World War II she was active in Jacksonville Jewish Committee, while David was in the Navy. Mrs. Alterman was vice president of programming for Ahavath Achim Sisterhood from 1948 to 1952. Was the second president of Henrietta Szold Group of Hadassah, vice president of Atlanta Hadassah. She was vice president of Southeastern Region of Hadassah in 1961. She is on the boad of the Jewish Community Center, and liaison chairman between youth and adults. She is on the board of Jewish Education, and has held the chairmanship of every division of Federation. She was overall chariman of Womens’ Division from 1961 to 1963. Sara Alterman was on the board of Ahavath Achim Sisterhood, Hadassah and Brandeis. She is past chairman of the Womens’ Division of Israel Bonds. She is a member of ORT, Council of Jewish Women, Mizachi, Hadassah, Service Guild, B'nai B'rith Women and Ahavath Achim Sisterhood.
