Biographical / Historical

A native of Atlanta, Sol Greenberg was a B-17 bombardier and a lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. During a mission flying out of England to bomb targets in Northern Germany, his plane was hit by ground and air fire. He bailed out of his plane and was soon picked up by the German police. He spent the rest of the war in a POW camp in Barth, Germany, which housed various air forces. The German air force, the Luftwaffe, ran the camp, which was on a peninsula jutting into the Baltic Sea across the icy channel from Sweden. Greenberg survived the war and returned to the United States before immigrating to Israel.
