This small collection contains miscellaneous items related to the Jewish Educational Alliance of Savannah, Georgia, created by two of its past presidents, Irwin B. Giffen and Dr. Lloyd S. Goodman. Of particular note are materials relating to the “Community Self Study for Jewish Youth,” a study conducted by the Savannah Jewish Council (now Federation) in 1965 and 1966.

Biographical / Historical

Irwin Brener Giffen was born on October 13, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Israel L. Giffen (1884-1951) and Diana Brener Giffen (1890-1983). He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and married Helen Margaret Lurio (1926-1993) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He served as the Executive Director of the Savannah Jewish Council for many years as well as the President of the Jewish Educational Alliance. Irwin and Helen had two children, Ira (b. 1953) and Debra (1955-2012). The family were members of Congregation Agudath Achim. Irwin Giffen died at his son’s home in Tacoma, Washington, on August 18, 1988, at age 66.

Lloyd Stanley Goodman was born on April 18, 1944 in Savannah, Georgia, to Abe Goodman and Beatrice Heyman Goodman (1920-2014). He graduated from Tulane University and the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. He is married to Sandra Goodman and is a cardiologist at the Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. A leader in the Jewish community, he is a Past President of the Jewish Educational Alliance.
