Biographical / Historical

On May 25, 1954, a meeting was held at the Atlanta Jewish Community Center attended by seventeen people to discuss organizing a new synagogue. Mr. Irwin Krick, acting as chairman, explained that two weeks previous a meeting was held at which time the group present decided to write to the United Synagogues of America requesting information for the group. A copy of the letter sent was read, a reply had not yet been received. The chair then called for a discussion by those present of their thoughts concerning a new synagogue. This discussion showed that those assembled felt that the function of a synagogue should not only be religious but social and cultural as well. That each member be an integral part and accept responsibility thereby feeling needed. The liberal conservative aspect was discussed and the thought introduced that the religious expressions not be a by-product of the social activities. They then founded Congregation Beth El, a Conservative synagogue that existed for the next decade.
