Biography
Sidney Louis Raskin was born in Savannah, Georgia on June 6, 1916. After attending the Chatham County Public Schools, the Benedictine Military School, and the University of Georgia, he was admitted to practice law in Chatham County in 1938. He entered the United States Army in 1941, serving on the home front and in the Pacific before and honorable discharge in 1945 as a Captain of Infantry. The following year, in 1946, he married Anita Lipton (1922-2002). They had four children and were members of Congregation B’nai B’rith Israel and Congregation Mickve Israel. Their children are Alex B. Raskin (b. 1947), Daniel E. Raskin (b. 1949), Kenneth M. Raskin (b. 1952), and Laurie Raskin Katz (b. 1955). Sidney Raskin died on September 28, 2011 in Savannah and was buried next to his wife in Bonaventure Cemetery.
Sidney Raskin was the son of Isaac Raskin (1895-1956) and Hannah Berner Raskin (1887-1974). Isaac Raskin was one of seven children of Yeshaya (d. 1910) and Masha “Mamie” Raskin (d. 1933), who came to the United States from Russia in the early 1900s.

The Raskin Family Papers are part of the Savannah Jewish Archives that were transferred from the Georgia Historical Society to the Breman Museum in 2015.
